Sox Get Gagne

    The Red Sox got their spot closer/set up man today in the trade with the Texas Rangers that'll bring Eric Gagne to Boston.  In return the Rangers will reportedly get Kason Gabbard, David Murphy and Engel Beltre.
    Overall I'm fine with this deal.  The main ingredient is Gagne and his arm health.  From the looks of everything, all is well.  2.16 ERA, 1.05 WHIP & 29 K's in 33.1IP.  Yes his role is yet to be determined, but to add him to the bullpen along with Papelbon & Okajima is just plain bolstering something that you can NEVER have enough of if you're going to contend which is bullpen.
    Giving up Gabbard and the 2 prospects is a small loss.  Gabbard has stepped into the rotation and performed reasonably well, but with Lester coming back the loss is serviceable.
    David Murphy is one of those guys whose seem to have been in the Sox system since 1980.  He's had 24 career Major League at-bats, he's a solid player but not one who was going to make an impact for the Red Sox anytime soon.
    As for the 18 year old Beltre, I had to trek over to SoxProspects.com to get any info on this kid.  And according to them Beltre is: A five-tool left-handed hitter with excellent power potential.  Strong arm and good range in centerfield.  Highly touted signing out of the Dominican Republic, signed for $575,000.  Hustles at every step . Very projectable as a power hitter once he grows into his body.
    All in all, I like the deal.  For a VERY slow & empty trading market this is a pretty decent pull.  Plus anytime we can get someone the Yankees are also after it can't be a bad thing.  Beckett/Bedard tonight in what should be a GREAT pitching match up (7:05pm, O's @ Red Sox).  Here's hoping the offense can give Beckett more than 1 run of support, and Congrats to Manny on getting the 'AL Player of the Week' award for 15th time.  Thanks for reading -- GO SOX!
